Why Doesn’t Prayer Work? A Look at Prayer From the Example Jesus Set by Wycliffe Bible Translators預覽

Your Will Be Done: Is Prayer More Than a Quick Fix?
It can be easy to fall into the habit of praying only when you want a quick fix, a miracle solution or a boost to get through a stressful moment in the day. But prayer isn’t just an opportunity to talk with God when you need extra help; prayer is something that should be an integral part of your life and relationship with your heavenly Father.
The Bible says that Paul prayed regularly, especially for others and individual churches. Even when he was in prison, Paul continued to pray beyond his own needs instead of praying for a quick fix or a literal “get out of jail free” card. In Ephesians 3:19a, Paul prays for the church at Ephesus and writes, “May you experience the love of Christ, though it is too great to understand fully” (NLT).
Whether you’re experiencing joy or sorrow, blessing or hardship, you should pray to God — regardless of your circumstances and the emotions they stir up. James 5:13 says, “Are any of you suffering hardships? You should pray. Are any of you happy? You should sing praises” (NLT).
Through the good and the bad, your decision to pray to God shouldn’t be based on how you feel in the moment — it should be continuous and marked by humility as you ultimately ask for His will to be done. When praying with the right perspective, it’s often easier to be joyful and thankful, no matter your circumstances (1 Thessalonians 5:16-18).
Questions for Reflection:
- What does it look like for God’s will to be done in your life?
- Think back to a time when you asked God for a “quick fix” to a situation. What did you ask for, and what was His response?
- How are you feeling right now? What thoughts are in the back of your mind? Whatever it is, consider following the advice in James 5:13 and bring it to the Lord.
