Pushed to the Light

“And it came to pass, on the day the Lord spoke to Moses in the land of Egypt, that the Lord spoke to Moses, saying, ‘I am the Lord. Speak to Pharaoh king of Egypt all that I say to you.’ But Moses said before the Lord, ‘Behold, I am of uncircumcised lips, and how shall Pharaoh heed me?’”—Exodus 6:28–30 (NKJV)

It’s interesting how some people know what they want to be when they “grow up” early in life, and some “grow up” and are still figuring out what they are meant to do with their lives or what their purpose is. We try to figure this out by logical means—like the things we enjoy doing or being around, what our giftings are, what sounds financially profitable, or what other people around us advise us to do, etc.

In today’s Scripture, we see Moses who has walked away from a “comfortable” lifestyle and a future that would seem more “secure” in the world’s eyes, being led and commanded by the Lord to do some things that seem very counterintuitive—to go against the Pharaoh that he grew up under and speak to him what the Lord says (which could potentially upset Pharaoh and have grave consequences). And not only that, but Moses was not a confident speaker and was afraid this would be pointless anyway.

But that doesn’t make sense. Why would a good God put Moses in such a dangerous position? And why give him a task he would not be good at?

Our Lord is not mean spirited or a bully. Like the good and only perfect father that He is, He wants us to grow and mature. He encourages us to push beyond what we believe we are capable of on our own so can we grow into His perfect purpose for us which will be more fulfilling than anything we could’ve thought of ourselves. But even beyond that, He also shows us that He will be with us, lead us, guide us, and provide what we need along the way. He will show Himself trustworthy and, most importantly, He will get the glory as He is Lord Almighty. All we need to do is follow and obey.

In these verses, we see how even as Moses speaks directly with the One true Creator God, Moses quickly shifts his focus from the “I AM” (God) to “I’m” (himself). No wonder he immediately became insecure! No matter how resourceful we think we are or are not, we are not sovereign or almighty. But if we walk with the One who is we have no excuses, as He has and is everything that we need.

Pause: Where have your rejected God’s guidance or leading recently?

Practice: Look up different Scriptures that say to “trust in the Lord.” Stop and meditate on how you can apply these to your circumstances.

Pray: Dear Lord, I admit that sometimes it is hard to walk by faith and trust in what You say. Please help me push past fear or any insecurities I may have, and put my faith and security in You. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
