A REBEL WITH A CAUSE

The “why” stage that we spoke about yesterday can be very demanding. But at least it assumes that our children trust us with their questions. They might weigh our answers against those of a teacher or friends, but our input still counts. Until we hit the teenage years.

Suddenly our teenage children have all the answers instead of the questions. And many of those answers have to contradict ours out of principle. Our children usually survive the turbulence without serious damage, but they invariably test the boundaries. It becomes very difficult to meet them where they are when we often have no clue where they are in the first place. Fortunately, that is not a problem that God struggles with.

God knows exactly where we are. During Paul’s rebellious years, he had no intention of sharing his plans to go to Damascus with Jesus. On the contrary, all his plans went against anything to do with Jesus. “Meanwhile, Saul was uttering threats with every breath and was eager to kill the Lord’s followers” (Acts 9:1, NLT). But again God is not intimidated by his poor children’s anger and rebellion.

When God meets us where we are, He knows exactly how He should speak to us. He knows when to wait in silence and when to comfort us until our anger subsides. Or when we need a spectacular intervention like Paul. “As he was approaching Damascus on this mission, a light from heaven suddenly shone down around him… Saul picked himself up off the ground, but when he opened his eyes he was blind” (Acts 9:3-7, NLT). Even the most stubborn rebel cannot argue with that!

Do you believe that God would do whatever is necessary to reach out to you? How is God currently speaking to you in a spectacular way? How can you examine yourself for any signs of rebellion against God?

Let us allow God to find us we chose a path away from Him. Let us open our ears to his voice when He meets us where we are. “Come to me with your ears wide open. Listen and you will find life. I will make an everlasting covenant with you. I will give you all the unfailing love I promised to David” (Isaiah 55:3, NLT).

Meet You There

Do you have children? What is the most challenging part of raising them? For me, it is this. Just when I have parenting figured out, the child moves into yet another phase, requiring a completely different approach. Fortunately, our heavenly Father knows exactly how to meet us where we are. This Plan takes us through our journey with our own children to understand the Father’s perfect love.
