Serve the LORD

The Psalmist implores the rebellious kings of this world who have risen against the LORD and his anointed One to be wise. He calls upon the pagan rulers of the earth to be warned. They are called to set aside their futile attempts to overthrow God and His anointed King. The rule of the LORD and his Messianic King cannot be thwarted by mortal man. Thus the powers that be are called upon to act prudently. They are called to exercise wisdom and surrender themselves to the LORD. They are called to renounce their sins and serve the LORD with fear. This is gospel wisdom, for the fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom, and all those who practice it have a good understanding (Psalm 111:10).

In this place of sacred submission, the rebels rejoice, for they are no longer at war with God and His anointed King. By submitting to God, the rebels remain in a place of salvation where there is no more condemnation. The terror of God’s judgment gives way to peace! The place of sacred submission is also a place of trembling; for it is the place where enemies of God are brought into his holy presence. It is an awesome place where sinners encounter Him who is a consuming fire able to destroy all unholy rebellion. If not for the mercy of God, sinners will be overthrown as the Pharoah of Egypt in the waters of God’s wrath. Therefore it is good and right to serve God with fear and trembling.

Jesus Christ, the greater Davidic King calls us to be wise and submit to his holy reign. He calls us to surrender our lives in service of him. It is the fool who fights against God, saying, “there is no God” (Psalm 53:1). God instructs us, “Be not wise in your own eyes; fear the LORD, and turn away from evil” (Proverbs 3:7). The truly wise of this world bend their knees in obedience to King Jesus. In this place of submission is found salvation and eternal rest for our souls. King Jesus’ yoke is easy and his burden is light (Matthew 11:29-30). He is not a demanding despot, but a benevolent Sovereign. After all, he is the only King who stepped down from his throne to love his enemies and die for them! Will you not serve this blessed King?
