What Is Sin?

“For the wages of sin is death” (Romans 6:23)

Sin leads to death.

God’s commandment to Adam and Eve was clear: “You may surely eat of every tree of the garden, but of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil you shall not eat, for in the day that you eat of it you shall surely die” (Genesis 2:16-17). Until then, death was not part of creation. But immediately after Adam and Eve’s disobedience, it was. An animal was killed to provide clothes for Adam and Eve. Cain killed his brother. Since then, countless children have died from illnesses, hunger or natural disasters; people groups have been wiped out by their enemies. Death is inevitable for any living being.

But the problem is even worse than “just” physical death. Humans are also spiritually dead, meaning they are unable to fulfill their original life goal to honor God. Their minds have been affected by sin and they have become evil.

Worst of all, the ultimate consequence of sin reaches beyond physical death. This is called “eternal death”, meaning that humans who refuse to repent and turn back to God, will spend eternity outside His presence in hell.

The only way to escape eternal death is to turn back to God before you die. Don’t wait, but accept eternal life as a free gift of grace!
