Adoration

This Prayer Plan has touched on prayers of gratitude, supplication, meditation, and contemplation. We’ve discussed praying in the words of Scripture and praying on the move, but our discussion of prayer would not be complete without adoration.

“I AM WHO I AM,” God told Moses, speaking from the burning bush in Exodus 3:14. “I will be what I will be.” God is inherently worthy of praise because of who He is and not only what He does.

God is more than his creative genius, more than his faithfulness to the Hebrews enslaved under Pharaoh and more than the incredible journey of Exodus. In adoration or praise, the focus is on the character of God.

“O Sovereign Lord! You have made the heavens and the earth by Your great power. Nothing is too hard for You!” prays Jeremiah. (Jeremiah 32:17)

This is adoration.

Of course, before you can include adoration in your prayer life, you need to get to know God well enough to speak to Him about His attributes. Who is God? What do you love about Him? What do you revere about Him? Why is He uniquely worthy of praise? Just tell Him, and you will be praying with adoration.

So what IS the nature of God? The Scriptures reveal God’s character. Here is a starting point:

  • Eternal (Deuteronomy 33:27)
  • All-powerful (2 Chronicles 20:6)
  • Holy and entirely good (Isaiah 6:3)
  • Incorruptible and righteous (Psalm 71:19)
  • Radically merciful (Psalm 103:8)
  • Forever faithful (Numbers 23:19)
  • Filled with endless, unmeasurable love (Ephesians 3:18)

Which attributes of God bring the most encouragement to you right now? Why?

Consider this music video.

Singer/songwriter Renee Joseph-Fortune composed this song, titled “Oluwa Is.” Renee writes:

“In Yoruba, ‘Oluwa Is’ means ‘God Is,’ and for me, God is anything and everything I need for my life [. . .] ‘Oluwa Is’ is a bold declaration of the mysteries of God and His miracle-working power to save and deliver us out of all forms of bondage.”

Adoration is a way of worshiping God, and it flows throughout all our prayers. We are grateful because God is so good and present. We can come before Him in supplication because he is so loving and strong. We can meditate and contemplate his attributes. We can pray with Scripture that reveals Him to us. As we walk prayerfully through this world, God’s character draws us back to his strength and goodness, over and over again.

Take a moment right now to stop and give God some adoration. Praise Him for his goodness, wisdom, loving-kindness, and faithfulness to you.

We hope this Plan has encouraged you and provided inspiration for your prayer life! We adapted this Plan from Engage Art’s App.
