Delivered from the Ash Heap

Traditionally, a Jewish family would sing Psalm 113-114 before the Passover meal. It is a compilation of wonderful reasons why we can praise the Lord!

Our earthly leaders put much prominence on their power of their position, but God’s is enthroned on high—higher than any earthly ruler. In fact, God “stoops down” to look on the heavens and the earth.

God willingly “stoops down” to pay attention to us too. He raises the poor from the dust and lifts people in need from the ash heap. The visualization of these verses would have been familiar to the listeners. The outcasts of the city would often gather at the ash heap. Why? The ash heap would be warmed during the day by the sun and would keep the people warm through the night. More than likely, the average person avoided this ash heap, but not God. He lovingly stoops down and lifts these needy people from the ash heap and seats them with princes.

Doesn’t this sound like what Jesus did for us? He left His exalted place on high to come to earth to save sinners. He reached into the ash heap and pulled us out of our filth. That’s love. We can now be seated with the righteous and humbly bow at Jesus’ feet.
