People Want a King

Samuel was a judge and prophet of the highest integrity yet, at the end of his life, the Hebrew people wanted Samuel to help them establish a new system of governance. Samuel would usher in a new historical period known as the era of the kings. It is natural for people to seek leaders, and naturally, people think their preferences should define good leadership. But Scripture teaches us to understand that only the Lord can be a wise and perfect King.

1. Samuel is “displeased” with the request and seeks God’s help through prayer. What does the Lord reveal to Samuel through prayer (verses 6–9)? How might Samuel’s revelation encourage you the next time someone rejects your biblical beliefs?
2. What does the Lord’s response to Samuel reveal about the earthly relationship God chooses to honor with man? Read Jeremiah 17:10 and Romans 14:12. What has always been true about our accountability to God?
3. Read 1 Timothy 6:11–16. What should Christians remember when they are tempted to be impressed by an earthly “king” or when they are preparing to vote for one?

The point of the original monarchy found in 1 and 2 Samuel, illustrates that from the beginning.
