Face to Face

There is such a strong desire in all of us to connect with others on an intimate level. We are always after the pursuit of a best friend, a life-long companion, someone with whom we can be 100% ourselves, someone who will love us for who we are, someone who notices us, and someone who truly understands us and we understand them.

We look for this relationship in people. We look for the “perfect match.” However, I have found over the years that this is a misguided search. Who we are really looking for is God. A person cannot truly fulfill the longing in our hearts at all times. What our heart longs for is wrapped up in Jesus. He is the only one who truly loves us unconditionally. He is the only one who truly sees and truly knows who we are and is pleased.

While for a season we may find what we are looking for in people, unfortunately, people are people. Our relationship with people and our dependency upon them is often the reason why we find it difficult to relate to God at times. A person we have loved and trusted has abandoned us, so will God abandon us? A person we loved and trusted has lied to us, so will God lie to us? A person we have loved and trusted has hurt us, so will God hurt us? It is because of these experiences that we find it challenging to truly open up and be vulnerable with God.

Moses was known as a friend of God. His communication with God would often result in his face glowing! I suppose the more you stay in the light, the more you are going to radiate it! Was Moses perfect? No. Did God see his weaknesses? Yes. Did this deter God from loving him, seeing him, spending time with him? No. Moses had a wonderful, open, intimate relationship with God. The Bible even mentions that when Moses died, he was strong and had perfect sight, but that he just died. That says to me it was just time for him to graduate to heaven. After all, it was Moses who said that he wasn’t going anywhere unless God came with him. What a wonderful picture of devotion!

We can have the same friendship with God. All we need to do is open up to God, tell him we’re not going anywhere without him and start communicating. Like the song says, “Here, now, this is the moment. Speak, now, I’m out in the open, with emptied hands, I reach again. These walls are finally falling, the space between us is closing. My heart gives way to perfect grace. I’m drawing closer than ever before. You’ve patiently waited and now I am sure Jesus, I lay my defenses down cause I just want You now.”

Let today be the beginning of the most intimate relationship you will ever have as you draw closer to God. As you draw near to Him, He will draw near to you and you will find all you are looking for – your perfect match!
