Our Wise Heavenly Father

Who do you turn to when you need advice? Seeking counsel from your parents, friends, or pastor is often helpful. But there is one whose wisdom is greater than all others—God himself. In today’s passage, God demonstrates that he is our supreme heavenly Father as he instructs us how to live and provides a framework for understanding the reason for our trials.

You’ve probably overheard a child ask, “Mommy, why does this happen?” Sometimes a frustrated parent is quick to respond, “Because that’s just the way it is!” Thankfully, God does not respond to our difficult questions in that way. As a patient and gentle Father, he takes the time to explain “why”—at least, up to a point. In James 1, God gives the answers to three of life’s most challenging questions:

  • Why do I experience trials? Trials provide an opportunity to test your faith so that you will become spiritually mature. You should even count these as blessings and rejoice, knowing that you are in the process of becoming more like Jesus Christ.
  • Where should I get wisdom? From God! Ask with trust and confidence and God will not rebuke you or turn you away. As your heavenly Father, he wants to answer your prayers and provide generously for you.
  • Where do tests and temptations come from? God can neither be tempted nor tempt anyone. Each person is tempted by their own desires. As a believer, you have the power to remain steadfast. Ultimately, all of God’s children will receive the crown of life and spend eternity with him!

Although your earthly parents and heavenly Father share some similarities, they are not the same. God’s power, love, and care extend far beyond any human abilities. Your heavenly Father is the one who brings you every good thing in life. Your mother gave birth to you physically, but God is your Creator. Parents may aim to be consistent, but God never changes. As his child, God chose for you to be born the way you are, and you are his prized possession. The next time you encounter a trial or need wisdom, turn to the Word of God and have confidence as you pray to your heavenly Father.

Victory Through Weakness

Suffering can be perplexing. God’s people—and even Jesus himself—have often asked the “Why?” question when facing suffering. Scripture pulls back the curtain to reveal some, though not all, of God’s purposes in permitting suffering to enter our lives. Through it all, we are called to persevere faithfully, resting in the assurance of ultimate victory and eternal reward.
