The Days of My Life All Prepared

One of our favorite things to do with God is to read a few different translations of a Scripture passage. We like to spend time—often 45 minutes in one sitting—reading the same verses over and over—from one translation and then another for a rich layering of experience and understanding. God has much to say to us. And His living, breathing scripture speaks to us personally, uniquely every time we encounter it.

And then, after spending time with a passage, we ask God what he thinks about our experience as we read. We share with Him what we noticed, how we felt, what we saw, what frustrated us, and what we liked. And we ask Him what more He has for us to notice in it, too.

Will you join us in reading a few times the translations of Psalm 139:16? Give yourself time to linger, considering what strikes you, what moves you, what image seems particularly vivid, and what idea seems encouraging or uncomfortable. And if you feel like one translation is speaking to your heart more than another, stick with that translation. Ask God what it is He is speaking to you through those words.

Then share a word or phrase or idea that you want to remember. We will pray those words over you.

"Your eyes saw my unformed substance;
in your book were written, every one of them,
the days that were formed for me,
when as yet there was none of them" (ESV).
"You saw who you created me to be before I became me!
Before I’d ever seen the light of day,
the number of days you planned for me
were already recorded in your book" (TPT).
"Like an open book, you watched me grow from conception to birth;
all the stages of my life were spread out before you,
The days of my life all prepared
before I’d even lived one day" (MSG).
