Deep Waters

Have you ever experienced the aftermath of sin? Sinners may go unpunished for many a bright hour, but mark my words, one day, the storm is coming. We can choose the sin, but we can’t choose the consequence, and sin never pays its servants a fair wage. Some men are paralyzed by the harvest of their sin twenty years after the seed was sown. They think their sins were like dead men, out of sight, out of mind—but these dead men have been resurrected and have come back to haunt them. At the time, the sin seemed pleasant and harmless, but now their past has caught up with them. Charles Spurgeon said, “Many a man bears in his bones the sins of his youth" (Metropolitan Tabernacle Pulpit, Vol. 32).

If you have not experienced the repercussions of your sin, do not hang around to see if God’s Word is true. The way of the sinner is hard, but the fear of the Lord leads to life, and there is hope for all of us. You may have rowed into strong waters but only one Man can row you out of them—the Man who the wind and the waves obeyed, the Man who walked on water, the Man who gives us the quenching water of everlasting life: God incarnate, Jesus Christ. Only He can deliver you from these tempestuous seas. So get into His lifeboat today. Though the storm may rage and you may bear the consequences of your sin today, if you’ve got a Lifeguard who walks on water in your boat—you’re eternally safe.

Jesus, lover of my soul, Let me to Thy bosom fly,
While the nearer waters roll, While the tempest still is high:
Hide me, O my Saviour, hide, Till the storm of life is past;
Safe into the haven guide; O receive my soul at last.
— Charles Wesley, "Jesus Lover of my Soul" (hymn).
