Indescribable Compassion (S2-E6)

What has Jesus called you to?

Jesus has called you. Like the disciples, you go after Him. He is your Master, and you fix your gaze on Him. But what has Jesus actually called you to? What task does He have for you? What does that look like? What form does it take?

In this part of The Chosen, the disciples ask themselves these questions. A wonderful phrase you come across is, "I don't know if anything is clear ... He (Jesus) is the only one who knows who I will become. Above all, He is the teacher, and we are His disciples."

Beautiful attitude, right?

In the passage from John, you come across a key. Jesus says there, I have chosen you, and I have destined you to bear fruit. Lasting fruit.

In Galatians, you encounter the fruit of the Spirit. The famous list of love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faith, gentleness and self-control.

In any case, Jesus wants that fruit to grow and be visible in your life. It cannot be on the ‘soil’ of your own ‘flesh,’ who you are, your own effort. It can only be on the 'soil' of the Spirit, His work in and through you. Therefore, it is the fruit of the Spirit.

In John, we find two more important characteristics. First, Jesus talks about asking the Father. Prayer.

Being in a conversation. Being in a relationship with Him. The Father wants to give, to provide (verse 16).

I call that the "vertical relationship" in which we stand, in which we are called.

In verse 17, you come across Jesus' command to love one another.

I call that the "horizontal relationship," the relationship in which we stand to one another. In that, love is the keyword.

Maybe you know the great commandment. There, you encounter both of these relationships (or directions) as well. If you think about "vocation," you may at least know that you may stand in both of those relationships and may grow, receive, and share.

What does that look like? That can have 1000-and-1 shapes and colors. The gifts and talents you have been given, your personality, who you are, and your experience all play a role in that.

As the disciples walked with Jesus and gradually discovered what they were allowed to do, so may you. Just go after Jesus. Live out of your relationship with the Father, and live in love with your brothers and sisters around you.

Take the following questions to think about:

  • What has Jesus called you to?
  • Do you have a concrete picture of that?
  • Do you see any of the fruit of the Spirit in your life?
  • What would you like to grow in?

Prayer:

"Lord, I would like to do what You ask of me. I want to grow and become more like You. I want the fruit of the Spirit to become more visible in my life. Lord, will You speak to me and direct me, lead me, give me direction? And would You give me the courage to do those things I already know I should do? You are the Master, and I want to follow You. Amen."
