What Is the Purpose of Fasting?預覽
Fasting for Guidance
He leads the humble in what is right, and teaches the humble his way. (Psalm 25:9)
The Bible tells us that God guides the faithful believer on the right path. If we put our trust in God, He will lead us in His way. The apostle Paul understood that guidance comes from God alone. When he appointed elders, he committed them to the Lord by prayer and fasting. Before going on a mission trip, Paul and his companions fasted for guidance of the Holy Spirit.
Ezra, too, fasted for direction and a safe journey. This shows that fasting, just like prayer, is a way to seek God’s guidance, both on a literal journey and also in making decisions. If you are preparing for a longer journey, or if you need God’s wisdom in making an important decision, fasting can be a good way to devote yourself to God. This doesn’t mean that God always clearly shows you the right choice, but it is still good to seek Him, because it is God who gives wisdom.
When fasting, pray for guidance and wisdom, just like David did: “Make me to know your ways, O Lord; teach me your paths. Lead me in your truth and teach me, for you are the God of my salvation; for you I wait all the day long.” (Psalm 25:4-5) Is this also your prayer today?
