Do Not Forget! Some Crucial Things Every Christian Should Keep in Mind預覽
It’s important to have realistic expectations
“Remember the word that I said to you: ‘A servant is not greater than his master.’ If they persecuted Me, they will also persecute you.” (John 15:20)
Shortly before His death, Jesus warned His disciples that the people who hated Him, would also hate His followers. Being a Christian is not a guarantee for an easy life, wealth and prestige; on the contrary, chances are that you will face difficulties because of your faith.
Why did Jesus make this discouraging announcement? It was to prepare His disciples for what would come. “I have said all these things to you to keep you from falling away.” (John 16:1)
In Matthew 13, Jesus tells a parable about people coming to faith. He compares them to seed sown in a field. He then says, “As for what was sown on rocky ground, this is the one who hears the word and immediately receives it with joy, yet he has no root in himself, but endures for a while, and when tribulation or persecution arises on account of the word, immediately he falls away.” (Matthew 13:20-21)
This is what Jesus wanted to guard His disciples from. He did not want them to have false and naive expectations, only to be greatly disappointed and confused when they would meet hostility and persecution.
What are your expectations of life as a follower of Jesus Christ? What are your experiences so far? What helps you to keep the faith?
