Great Is

Some of my favorite verses in the Bible are Psalms 103:1-2:

“Bless the Lord, O my soul, and all that is within me, bless His holy name!”

The psalmist could have settled for a feeling but instead instructed our very souls to praise the Lord. For my soul to praise the Lord this means not just a surface praise but to praise Him with my whole being. The next verse goes on to say:

“Bless the Lord, O my soul, and forget not all his benefits.”

It’s almost like the psalmist knew we would need to develop a discipline of reminding ourselves of God’s faithfulness because our human minds so quickly tend to forget! I can recall countless times I’ve found myself in an uncertain situation, and my first response was fear or anxiety, but the Lord has been reminding me of a powerful tool we have as believers to combat this.

Psalms 119:24 says, “Your testimonies are my delight; they are my counselors.”

I love this revelation of testimonies being counselors that we can use as a reliable guide to recenter our hearts and minds on truth. Not just on the truth of God’s track record but on the truth of who He is. There’s nothing that fuels my faith more than rehearsing testimonies of the past faithfulness of God. Every time we declare the words of “GREAT, IS” my prayer is that immediately our minds would be taken back to a place of reflection—of who God is and all He’s done in our lives. I pray that no matter what we are feeling or what season of life we may find ourselves in, willwe would have the courage to command our souls to praise the Lord. Not because it’s easy but because He’s worthy.

Prayer: Father, thank You for who You are and all the ways You’ve been faithful in my life. I pray You would allow me to look ahead with hope but not fail to stop and remember Your past faithfulness. Let my history with You be a reminder to my soul that You’ve never left my side, and You aren’t capable of failing me. Allow the confidence of Your faithfulness to give me the strength I need to take the next step of faith that You’re calling me to take. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
