Respected Oxford professor and preacher John Wycliffe believed every Christian should have access to the Bible. “The common people of England know [the teaching and life of Jesus] best in their mother tongue.” His followers began a translation of the Latin Vulgate version of the Bible in the 1380s, and gave English speaking people a Bible. Wycliffe helped set the stage for the Protestant Reformation and the translation of the Bible into the language of the people.
