Step 9: Ask God to erase the images in your mind

There is a saying, ‘A picture paints a thousand words’. Jesus said that your eye is the lamp to the body and if your eye causes you to sin, gouge it out. Pretty full on, right?

Jesus wanted people to take seriously what they see with their eyes. Jesus understood that it is hard to unsee what you have seen. If you see something that shocks you, it can stay in your mind for days, weeks, months, and even years. As you read this, some of you might have never forgotten some of the things you have seen with your own eyes.

Pornography sticks in the mind because often these images are shocking. But God wants to renew our minds. He wants to transform our lives and change our hearts. Romans 12:1-2 is a powerful passage where Paul, the author of the book, urges the early church to respond to the mercy of God (not getting what we deserve for sinful behavior), by giving our lives back to him as a living sacrifice. This is how we truly worship God.

As we worship God, not conforming to the patterns and behaviors of the world, we are transformed by the renewing of our minds. Transformation happens as we live to please, honor, and worship God. So, friends, as your mind is renewed, old behavior patterns, the things you used to do, addictions, and bad habits, can change. Also, memories and images in your mind can begin to disappear as you worship with your whole life.

As you live in God’s freedom, you start to live in God’s will for your life. His will is good, pleasing, and perfect. As Paul says to the Philippian church, ‘Whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable - if anything is excellent or praiseworthy - think about such things.’ (Philippians 4:8). As you do this, the past images you have seen will fall away and be forgotten.
