Holy Spirit - Breath of Godنموونە
GUIDANCE
“Trying to do the Lord’s work in your own strength is the most confusing, exhausting, and tedious of all work. But when you are filled with the Holy Spirit, then the ministry of Jesus just flows out of you.” — Corrie ten Boom
The Holy Spirit is a guide. He guided the Israelites through dreams, visions, voices, prophets, and signs. In John 16:13, Jesus says, “When he, the Spirit of truth, has come, he will guide you into all truth.” Paul echoes this in Romans 8:14, saying, “For all who are led by the Spirit of God are sons of God.” In Acts 8, the Spirit guided Philip to the chariot of the eunuch, and in Colossians 4, Paul prays for God to open doors for the gospel.
The Holy Spirit desires to guide us in our decision-making, both in ministry and life. He mainly guides us through the truths of the Bible, but also through godly counsel, our desires, conscience, and emotions. Determining the Spirit’s guidance versus the flesh requires discernment.
Too often, we make plans and then seek God’s confirmation. To be led by the Spirit, as Jesus was, requires intentionality, humility, patience, faith, wisdom, practice, and a community of faith. As you discern the Spirit’s guidance, invite fellow believers to join you on the journey, helping you identify blind spots and confirm the Spirit’s leading.
DISCERNMENT EXERCISE
After reading the Scriptures of the day, take time to reflect and invite the Holy Spirit into a decision you are wrestling with.
- Find a quiet space, take a few deep breaths, and ask the Holy Spirit to guide you in your decision-making, requesting the Spirit’s power to follow through on the guidance you receive. Write down the decision you’re facing, along with any fears, emotions, or concerns you have.
- Next, imagine what your life would look like if you made that decision—how do you feel about it? Do you experience peace, or is your conscience unsettled? Does the decision bring joy, or do you feel uneasy or guilty? Write down your thoughts and then repeat this process for the alternative scenario.
- Afterward, share your thoughts with your Christian community and ask for prayer and feedback. Allow them to affirm or challenge your decision.
- Finally, once you’ve evaluated your options, step out in faith and make your decision, trusting that the Holy Spirit will guide you.
