Day 9: Greatness Comes in Serving

I believe all of Mankind seeks greatness, but where does greatness come from? Is it being noticed? Is it gaining popularity? Is it becoming influential? Is it getting recognition?

In Mark 10:35-45, Jesus answers that question in His candid response to James and John’s request to sit at either side of Him in Heaven. He knew that James and John had the wrong idea of what it would take to be exalted, and His answer was surprising: to be exalted, one must become a servant to others.

Serving is an outward expression of our recognition of the value of others. It’s a humble display of the Love of Christ and many times, an opportunity to share the Gospel of Jesus. We see people around us change when we serve.

This was Jesus’s message to James and John—they wouldn’t be true leaders if they lorded over their followers with power and authority. Rather, they would be true leaders if they gained power and authority by serving others.

How did Jesus get to Glory? Through suffering. He got there through the Cross. Leadership looks a lot like the Cross—laying your life down for those around you. Leadership is not power. It’s sacrificing your life for someone else. We serve because we know Somebody who served us all with the Greatest Sacrifice ever known to Mankind.

Greatness is found in serving others. How do we develop serving in our lives? Serving is a heart attitude that is developed when we understand the Heart of God.

When we know that He is constantly Good His Goodness floods our hearts and we don’t have any other way to respond to the people around us other than to serve them.

When we understand that God created us, formed us, fashioned us, loved us enough to save us, and gave us Eternal Purpose we don’t have any other way to respond to the people around us other than to serve them.

When we begin to see miracles in our life walking with God faith is developed. Faith in God and His Word grow inside of us. We begin to believe that all things are possible with God. And this heart attitude doesn’t leave us with any other options other than responding to the people around us by serving them.

When we partner with God and His Word through personal responsibility our heart responds to the people around us by serving them.

When we serve we have taken our eyes off our ourselves and determined that only God is Glorified through what we are doing. And Jesus said this is where greatness is found.

Don’t strive for influence and recognition. Strive for the cup of humility and leave the honor and influence up to God.
