A Safe Space To Grow

A community is a place where we can feel safe to grow. It’s a place where we can ask hard questions, express doubts, and wrestle with faith without fear of judgment. It’s a space to practice using the gifts of the Holy Spirit, cry when we’re hurting, and be vulnerable in our struggles.

This is the type of love that Peter speaks about in 1 Peter 4. When we know we are loved within the community, we can feel safe to grow and be authentic. And the best way to receive this sort of love from others is to extend it to others first.

We all come from different backgrounds, have unique personalities, and carry diverse perspectives. And that’s okay! The beauty of community is that we don’t have to agree on everything to grow together. In fact, the very differences we have with each other are opportunities for growth. It’s in those moments of tension, when we disagree or feel frustrated, when God uses others to challenge us and shape our character.

In the midst of challenging conversations, we must remember that we are called to love one another as Christ loves us. We are not sledgehammers or clanging cymbals, as we read in Hebrews. Our words should be tempered with love, patience, and grace. We need to be quick to listen and slow to speak, remembering that God’s love flows through us in these interactions.

It also flows within our service to one another. In deep community, we should consider how we can use the gifts and talents God has given us to serve, help, and build up each other. When someone feels seen and appreciated through service, it can settle their hearts to know that they are in a space that’s safe to grow.

When we know we are loved and supported in our community, we become more confident in who God has called us to be.
