As the Deer

When we’ve followed the Lord for a while, our relationship with him might become habitual and maybe even mundane. As we get older and wiser, we might lose some of the passion and zeal we had in our younger years. This isn’t necessarily a bad thing, but we do want to be wary of a waning desire for the Lord. His presence is meant to be the thing we seek wholeheartedly for all our days. Even if we’ve settled into a comfortable routine, it’s important to continue making sure our hearts are engaged. God’s love for us never changes or wanes, and ours should remain steady as well. Our response to him can be vibrant and fresh each day.

If you’ve begun to feel distant or disengaged, take time to reflect on your relationship with the Lord. Remember his faithful goodness throughout your life and revisit the times he has shown up for you. Think about the ways he has blessed and encouraged you along the way. Recall how he intervened on your behalf and stand in awe of the work he has done.

If you are feeling tired, ask God to renew your affections for him. As you seek him, he will fill you with a longing for more of his presence. If your time with him has become more of a habit or something you check off a list, ask him to revitalize your faith. It is never too late to seek him with the fervor of a new believer.

Every time you turn to God he responds with mercy and grace. There is no need to feel ashamed if your relationship with him has felt stale. He isn’t frustrated with you, and he isn’t tapping his foot impatiently, waiting for you to be more excited. He waits for you with open arms and kindness. He longs for you to approach him with anticipation and hopeful expectation.
