Stepping Forward with Purpose and Confidence

Ecclesiastes 11 invites us to live with open hands and bold trust. The Preacher urges us to cast our bread upon the waters, to sow seeds even when the outcome is uncertain, and to rejoice in our days without pretending we control them. Life under the sun is unpredictable—but rather than freezing in fear, we’re called to act wisely, generously, and joyfully, trusting that purpose can still flourish in mystery.

In Colossians 2, Paul offers a similar call—this time grounded in the unshakable reality of Christ. We’re reminded that all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge are hidden in Him. Paul warns against hollow philosophies and human traditions that distort our view of what truly matters. In Christ, we are rooted, built up, and made alive. No matter how uncertain the world may seem, our purpose is secure because it is found in Him.

These two passages together call us to live purposefully—not because we have all the answers, but because we are connected to the One who does.

Reflection Question:
Where are you tempted to hold back out of fear or uncertainty, and how might trusting in Christ empower you to live and act with greater purpose today?

Prayer of Illumination:
Lord, in a world full of unknowns, root my heart in what is sure. Let your Word today shape my trust, deepen my purpose, and move me to live with boldness and joy in Christ. Amen.

Reading With the People of God #15 Purpose

This is the fifteenth installment of our Bible reading plan, following a lectionary-style pattern with daily readings from the Psalms, Old Testament, and New Testament. Each day includes a devotional primer to guide your time in God’s Word. This month’s theme is purpose. In Ecclesiastes, we question what truly matters. Song of Songs reveals the purpose of love and relationships. Paul’s letters call us to live with clarity, identity, and mission in Christ. Together, these books invite us to discover God’s purpose—and how it shapes every part of our lives.
