THE ONE TRUE GOD
Today, idolatry can happen in a variety of ways. You can outright worship or believe in a false god, engage in a practice that taps into the spiritual realm outside the will and authority of Jesus Christ, or even attribute God-like characteristics to inanimate objects.
One day, when I was living in Hollywood, I walked into a little “magic” shop by my house to pick up incense. It was full of thousands of different potion oils (Wanna get someone to fall in love with you? Hurt someone who hurt you?), little statues of “gods” for different purposes (Prosperity! Health!), candles that had powers (Book the job! Make a million dollars!), and so much more.
It all sounds so positive and beneficial, doesn’t it? Yet 2 Corinthians 11:14 cautions us, “Satan himself masquerades as an angel of light.” So many things that sound “light” are really of the darkness and the devil.
While I was looking around the shop, I went to pick up a statue that was supposed to bring prosperity and financial blessing. (I was a believer then, but not yet trained by the Word.) As I was reaching for the statue, I heard God say in my heart, No. That is not for you. I left and never returned.
I’m not here to judge you if you’ve participated in New Age or occult practices. Nor if you’ve clung to other kinds of idols, whatever they might be. I just want you to know that you don’t need things of this world to bring you clarity, healing, or hope.
Your hope rests in Jesus, the beginning and end of all things.
Dear Jesus, I repent from any time I have put something above you or before you. I ask that you take your rightful place on the throne as Lord of my life. Amen.
