DAY 3: Living Water

From the Old Testament to the New, God uses water to point us to Himself as the only true source of satisfaction.

Jesus picked up this imagery at Jacob’s well with a Samaritan woman, promising water that would leave her never thirsty again (John 4:13). But His boldest claim came later, during the Feast of Tabernacles.

On the climactic “great day” of the festival, the people remembered how God provided water from a rock in the wilderness (Exodus 17:6). A priest would draw water from the Pool of Siloam, carry it back to the altar, and pour it out before the Lord—an act of gratitude and anticipation.

At that very moment, Jesus stood and shouted: “Let anyone who is thirsty come to me and drink,” (John 7:37 NIV). He declared Himself to be the source of living water. The priests, the rituals, even the temple itself—all of it pointed to Him.

Imagine the silence that fell. This carpenter from Nazareth was claiming equality with God. No more chasing after cracked cisterns. No more empty rituals. He alone could quench the thirst of every human soul.

And He’s still making that offer today. When life feels unsatisfying—when you’re overwhelmed, hollow, or desperate for more—those longings may be God’s way of making you thirsty for Him. As John Piper has said, “The key to Christian living is a thirst and hunger for God.” Without it, we settle for less, never tasting the fullness of His grace.

The Bible ends with the same invitation:

“Let anyone who is thirsty come. Let anyone who desires drink freely from the water of life.” —Revelation 22:17 NLT

Jesus doesn’t just promise a sip. He promises rivers of living water flowing within you. Enough not only to satisfy you, but to overflow into the lives of others.

DRINK DEEP

Where do you feel most unsatisfied right now? Instead of trying to fix it yourself, bring that thirst to Jesus. Ask Him to fill you with rivers of living water—enough to quench your soul and spill over into those around you.
