The Generous Leader

Paul's words in 2 Corinthians 9 are like an economics lesson written by someone who has seen behind the curtain of how God's economy actually works.

The logic is surprising, almost counterintuitive: give generously, and you will have more to give. Give sparingly, and you will have less. God loves a cheerful giver, not a reluctant or forced one, and he multiplies the resources of those he can trust with them, so that their generosity can increase even further.

What this passage assumes is foundational: everything you have belongs to God. You are not an owner. You are a steward of his resources. Some of what he entrusts to you is for your own flourishing. Some of it is meant to flow through you to others. The art of generosity is learning the difference, and having the open-handed courage to act on it.

For those of us in the marketplace, this is very important. Business is one of the most powerful channels through which resources like money, expertise, networks and opportunities are created and distributed. When a business leader operates with generosity, it shapes not just personal giving but the culture of the entire organisation.

Generosity is broader than money. You can be generous with your time, your knowledge, your network, your patience, your praise, and giving the benefit of the doubt. You can structure your business in a way that creates opportunity for people who would not otherwise have it. You can mentor those who have no access to mentors. You can advocate for suppliers and employees who have no voice.

Willem Eksteen, one of the business leaders behind this devotional series, describes himself as "a junior partner in God's business." That framing is liberating. If it is God's business, he bears ultimate responsibility. My job is faithful stewardship, and faithful stewardship is always generous.

Reflection Questions

  1. Do you think of the income and resources from your work as belonging to you, or as entrusted to you by God? How would that shift in perspective change your decisions?
  2. Beyond financial giving, where are you being called to be more generous: with your time, skills, network, or wisdom?
  3. What would a genuine culture of generosity look like in your workplace? What would it cost, and what might it produce?

Prayer

Generous Father, everything I have comes from you. Please forgive me for holding on tightly to what is really yours. Please give me open hands and an open heart toward my colleagues, my community, and all you care about. Please show me the difference between what you have given me for my own flourishing and what you intend to flow through me to others. And where I am afraid to be generous, please replace that fear with the faith that you will always provide what I need to do the good you have called me to.
