Courage in the Marketplace
Moses was dead. The greatest leader Israel had ever known was gone. And now God turned to Joshua and said: “Go.”
Joshua knew what lay ahead. He had been one of twelve spies sent to survey the Promised Land decades earlier. Ten of those spies came back paralysed by fear; the cities were fortified, the inhabitants were giants, it was impossible. Only Joshua and Caleb returned with a different spirit: "We can certainly do it." They had seen the same obstacles, but they interpreted them through a different lens: the character and faithfulness of God.
Now Joshua was the one called to lead the people in. And God's word to him was not a strategic plan. It was a command: "Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go" (Joshua 1:9).
This is the word for every Christian in business who is facing their own version of fortified cities.
The marketplace demands courage. It takes great courage to maintain integrity when the system rewards compromise; courage to make decisions based on values rather than just metrics; courage to speak truthfully in a meeting room that prefers comfortable compromises; courage to pioneer something new when everyone around you insists it cannot be done.
But courage is not recklessness. Joshua was also commanded to meditate on God's Word and to act carefully according to it (Joshua 1:7–8). Biblical courage is not the absence of fear, it is the refusal to let fear be the loudest voice. It takes into account reality. It is courageous and clear-eyed.
Sometimes, it even takes courage to hold back, to wait, to not react, to trust God with an outcome you cannot control. Joshua knew that too.
Reflection Questions
- What is your "Promised Land" when it comes to your work – the territory God seems to be calling you toward? What are the "giants" that are making you hesitate?
- Can you think of a time when you allowed fear of failure, financial loss, or reputational damage to prevent you from doing what you believed was right? What was the cost?
- Is there a courageous decision you have been putting off? What would it look like to take the first step this week?
Prayer
Lord, I confess that I am often more afraid than I appear. Fear of failure, of judgment, of loss – these shape my decisions more than I want to admit. Thank you that your word to Joshua is also your word to me: be strong and courageous, for you are with me wherever I go. Please give me that courage today, not recklessness, but Spirit-empowered boldness to do what is right even when it is costly. And please, Lord, help me to distinguish between the courage to move forward and the courage to wait. I trust you with the outcome.
Amen.
