DAY 1 OF 15

God's Word: The Bible

Maybe you are brand new to Scripture - the Bible. Simply put, The Bible is what God wanted to say to humanity - His word to us.  The Bible is a collection of sixty-nine books written by approximately forty authors spanning over the course of about sixteen hundred years. Although God used flawed men and women to pen the words, He inspired every word that was written (2 Peter 1:21).  That is why with supernatural consistency, the entire narrative of The Bible all points to Jesus!

The Bible is divided into two testaments or covenants - the Old Testament and the New Testament. The Old Testament was God's covenant or promise with Abraham and his descendants (Israel).  That promise led us to Jesus as the one who would fix what we had broken in this life.  Jesus came to usher in a new covenant between God and all of humanity (not just Israel).  It is through Jesus' death and resurrection that we can be restored to God and find hope for eternity!

Before Jesus began his ministry, he spent 40 days alone in the wilderness, fasting and praying with His Father.  During that time, the devil came to tempt him away from his purpose and his power.  Each time the devil tempted Jesus, he responded by quoting Scripture.  Jesus showed us the importance of knowing God's Word so that we can know right from wrong and find direction for our lives. Perhaps one of the best ways to think about God's Word is that of spiritual food.

Can you imagine going days without eating? Hopefully not, yet many people do this spiritually. They may only eat once a week, if they attend church. Just like starving ourselves physically leaves us weak and anemic; the same is true spiritually.  We need our "daily bread" to give us spiritual life and into a relationship with our Creator.

"Every Scripture has been written by the Holy Spirit, the Breath of God. It will empower you by its instruction and correction, giving you the strength to take the right direction and lead you deeper into the path of godliness" (2 Timothy 3:16).

Prayer:

"God, thank You so much for the great treasure of Your Word. Sometimes I don't even know what I'm reading. But I commit to eating the bread of Your Word regularly. Help me to understand and apply all that I read. Holy Spirit, I ask You to give me insight and reveal to me as I read and reflect each day. I thank You in advance that I will be forever changed by the power of your true and voice. In Jesus' matchless name, Amen!"
