"We three kings…"

Pause. Now think back to what you just read. Do you remember how many wise men were mentioned? If you said three, I hate to break it to you, but you’re wrong. That’s a myth. 

It doesn’t say. Matthew simply says “some wise men”. Not three. Some. Some could mean 3, 10, 12, 25, 50. But, nobody knows for certain how many wise men were.

Where did the number three come from? It's most likely from the three gifts the wise men brought to Jesus - gold, frankincense, and myrrh. 

So, next time you hear the Christmas song, We Three Kings, feel free to choose whichever number you want and sing along while everyone around you gives you strange looks.
