Choose Life
Deuteronomy 30:11–20
Moses, at the end of his life, gave final instructions to prepare God’s people for entering the Promised Land. He challenged and encouraged them, a people graciously rescued from bondage, to choose life and good instead of death and evil.
But how can we choose life? God reminds us, through Moses, to love Him and to walk in His ways. This is why we’re made, what we were redeemed for, and what we are to enjoy. To choose life is to choose Him.
If you’re like me, it can seem impossible to win this battle between our flesh and the things of God, but remember that Jesus came so that we may have the fullness of life (John 10:10; 14:6). He has given us His Word to help saturate our minds on His character and our new identity in Him (Deuteronomy 30:11, 14). So let us not set our minds on the flesh, but rather on things of the Spirit (Romans 8:5–6).
Christ redeemed us from our sin so we can commune with Him and daily submit ourselves to His gracious rule. In fact, God can use our communion with Him to create generations of godly influence (Deuteronomy 30:19–20). The more we feast on the goodness of God to us through the life, death, and resurrection of His Son, the more we expel sin that so easily entangles us.
Father, I want more of You. I want You enthroned upon my life and for my sinfulness to continually die. This will not occur by my power or will, but through the strength that You give me. Help me to walk in faith, by the Spirit, and to choose You above anything else. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
Family Connection: Talk as a family about the difference between a good choice and a bad choice. When we focus on Jesus and pray to Him, we are able to choose what is good; tell about a time when this has been true in your life. Jesus came to give us life, and overcome death.
