Joy: 37-Day Devotional

DAY 22 OF 37

Imagine traveling a road by foot that is dry and dusty. During biblical times after long journeys, “foot washing” was considered a job for the lowliest servants. Jesus was the first to set the example of humility by washing His own disciples’ feet. He had a love so great He felt compelled to serve.

Each of our own personal journeys is different, but one thing remains: our feet have become dusty along the way from the roads we’ve each traveled. My journey has taken me back somewhere familiar, but upon returning, I’ve since been transformed.

In 2004, while I was incarcerated, I cried out to the Lord. I made a promise that if I ever were delivered from prison, I would give back to inmates in some way.

Years passed and I totally forgot that prayer. One day, a discipling mentor asked me a simple question; “Do you think you can get jail clearance?” It was in that moment that God reminded me of the prayer and promise I had made twelve years earlier.

Every Monday, I'm blessed to enter a women’s prison because God called me to spread HOPE and JOY in a dark place. My prayer is that I can shine a light brightly for Christ. Any opportunity to share with others how Jesus radically changed my life is an act of obedience to HIS commands. I feel that every time I re-enter those doors, it’s an act of obedience comparable to “the washing of feet” and worship to HIM in my service to others.

Since I can’t physically wash the inmate’s feet, I humble myself before them with my story of hope and healing through the love of God. This is how I feel closer to God and part of HIS plan and purpose.

Heavenly Father, I ask that you use me as a vessel for you. Fill me up so that Your Spirit is running over and I may spill some of your love and light to others. I pray that you continue to bless my humble ministry to others so that I can bring more into the gates of heaven with me—AMEN!
