Joy: 37-Day Devotional

DAY 21 OF 37

In the American culture today, we are surrounded by the notion that if you have great wealth, the perfect power job, and the perfect body type—among other things—you will be happy. When you achieve all of this, then your life will be perfect, right?

Unfortunately, in this way of thinking, everything is based on external factors. What happens if someone prettier comes along, your company downsizes, and you no longer have the powerful job? What if the stock market takes a big dip or your circumstances change or you just have a bad day? Will you still be happy? More than likely, you will not because your happiness has depended on circumstances.

In our scripture today, Jesus offers more than happiness. He offers us the eternal joy of His salvation. Jesus is having a discussion with the disciples telling them that very soon their world with Him is going to be shattered. Unbeknownst to them, He is going to be crucified and buried. Of course, they would mourn and grieve for the teacher they knew and loved. However, something that they couldn’t comprehend at that time would happen. The very thing that shattered their world would bring them the joy of His salvation.

His resurrection after the crucifixion brings eternal mercy and grace to all generations who believe in Him. More specifically, it brings the joy of His salvation. Jesus is what we need for true joy, no matter what our circumstances are or what our culture tells us we need.

Joy for the believer is from God and is always within us. If the joy of His salvation is the center of your life and not happiness based on circumstances, the life you live will be joyous even when the circumstances are difficult.

Jesus will always walk with you on your life's journey through all circumstances, giving you the joy of His Salvation. What a precious gift He gives us!

Father, help me to remember that your joy of salvation through Jesus Christ is with me in all circumstances.
