Beyond: Following the Way of Jesus as We Do Outreach Sample

Going Beyond
In the Gospel of Jesus Christ, we see ministry taking place outside of the temple and synagogue. Jesus is moving through different communities meeting the natural and spiritual needs of those who are impoverished and marginalized.
He chose to do ministry beyond the walls of the building. Why didn’t Jesus do the majority of his work in the temple like the Priests and Pharisees? Why didn’t he come to rule like king David and sit on the throne?
While Jesus could have done all of these things, he chose to humble himself and serve those in need. He didn’t just serve them, he spent quality time with them and taught them kingdom principles. He chose to be among the less fortunate and this created a paradigm shift. Jesus made those in need the center of his mission on earth. Jesus intentionally chose to humble himself because he knew what pride does to humans. In doing so, he modeled for us how we should do ministry.
God showed us that true ministry goes beyond the walls of a building. Therefore, let us model his strategy in our churches and ministries. Let us understand the needs of the community we are in and go feed the hungry, clothe the naked, invite the stranger in, visit those in prison and give drink to the thirsty. Let us participate in the ministry Jesus modeled for us and fulfill our duty on earth. Let us go beyond.
Question to Ponder:
How can you help those in need in your local community?
