WHAT’S IN A WORD?
“Pure and genuine religion in the sight of God the Father means caring for orphans and widows in their distress and refusing to let the world corrupt you.” —James 1:27
Some words make us uncomfortable, so we choose to avoid them.
The word etiquette seems too hoity toity to be used by surfers, right? We’re not typically the ones lifting our pinkie while drinking our tea or coffee.
But even if the word etiquette never crosses your lips, the important point is that you know and follow the rules of the line-up and expect others to abide by them too: don’t snake; don’t wave-hog; keep your claims to a minimum; etc.
You might not like the word religion any more than you like etiquette—and you’re not alone. It’s often berated among believers as unbefitting for our tribe, but Jesus’ brother James wasn’t hesitant to use it, as you can see in the verse today.
So whether or not you choose to use the words etiquette regarding surfing or religion regarding faith, the more important thing is that you surf in a way that respects others and live in a way that honors God.
What does that mean for you in your life? Well, James spells it out clearly. Care for others in need (represented by the orphans and widows in this Scripture). And don’t allow the corruption of the world—with its constant focus on self and wealth—to corrupt you and blind you to the abundant life you can have as you live connected to the One.
As a Christian surfer, you have opportunities to serve your tribe both locally and abroad. And your relationships with fellow Christians who surf can inspire you to live focused on Jesus and refuse the corruption of the world.
Together you can surf and serve, living life to the full!
Go Deeper:
- Do you have surfing friends who love Jesus, or a local surfer-friendly church to help you get more of that pure and genuine religion? How can you step into those relationships and support each other to do more?
- How can your surfing enhance your serving? Do you see opportunities to bring those two elements of your life together?
