A SERVANT WHO SURFS
Your light must shine before people in such a way that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father who is in heaven.
—Matthew 5:16
Some surfers are never satisfied. You probably have a few at your local spot. They seem to be on edge during their surf sessions rather than fully enjoying the moment. They complain about the crowd or the conditions. They’re poised for conflict—and their facial expressions and body language show it.
In contrast, others seem perpetually stoked. They bring aloha to the line-up and cheer others on. They’ll always say, “It was fun out there!”
And what about you? Does Christ shine through your countenance and communication in the water?
Paul famously wrote, “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me” (Philippians 4:13).
He didn’t mean that he could paddle out on a whim at Nazare and ride the wave of the day. He meant that Jesus empowered him to face every high and every low without losing his composure and joy.
If you have room to grow in this area, make it a priority. Pray about it. Ask a friend to help you be salt and light in your surf community. Let others see that you, too, can do even this because of Christ in you.
Because when people look at you, they will see the One whom you serve. You’re not just a surfer. You’re a servant who surfs—and the people around you can see the difference that makes in your life.
Over the past five days, we’ve looked at surfing and serving as followers of Christ. We’ve seen how that can influence every aspect of life: from how we learn and deal with the unknown to even the basics of life, such as how we carry ourselves and the words we speak.
Ultimately, the aim is to genuinely live out your faith in the One—and connect authentically with others as you do. That’s how you can impact surf culture for Jesus.
