Becoming Like Jesus: Scripture Memorization

DAY 19 OF 35

He’s Coming Soon

Pray…

Father God, thank you for all you’ve done for me. Lord Jesus, thank you for giving me life and saving me from my sins. Holy Spirit, change me from the inside out to become more of who I’m meant to be. In Jesus’ name, amen.

Read…

Let everyone see that you are considerate in all you do. Remember, the Lord is coming soon. Don’t worry about anything; instead, pray about everything. Tell God what you need, and thank him for all he has done. Then you will experience God’s peace, which exceeds anything we can understand. His peace will guard your hearts and minds as you live in Christ Jesus. Philippians 4:5-7 NLT

Consider…

These are some of the most well known verses in all of Scripture. It’s in this passage that Paul instructs us to not worry about anything but instead to pray about everything. Because Paul knows that God is a good and loving father who wants to know what’s bothering us and give us what we need. When we bring our cares and worries to God, He will give us peace in return. Right before Paul tells us not to worry though, He gives us the key to this passage: “Remember, the Lord is coming soon.” Because Jesus is coming back, and He is bringing all of Heaven with Him, we can live free from worry. But when we do worry, we can bring that to our loving Father because we know He loves us.

When you feel overwhelmed by worry, what do you do? How does seeing God as your Father and yourself as His child influence that? In difficult times, have you tried to remember that there will come a day when Jesus returns to make every wrong thing right? If not, would you consider clinging to that thought and see if it brings you some level of comfort and hope?

Practice…

“Pray like this: Our Father in heaven, may your name be kept holy. May your Kingdom come soon. May your will be done on earth, as it is in heaven. Give us today the food we need, and forgive us our sins, as we have forgiven those who sin against us. And don’t let us yield to temptation, but rescue us from the evil one.” Matthew 6:9-13 NLT

Write this passage down on a piece of paper, a note card, or in your journal. After that, take a few minutes to practice memorizing these verses in whatever way works best for you. At this point in the journey, there are probably some things that you know have been really helpful and some things that maybe didn’t work as well for you. Before you finish practicing, pray and ask God to plant these words deep in your heart.

Listen…

Set a timer for five minutes.

Find a quiet place and get alone with God. Maybe it’s outside, in your bedroom, or in your car. Just be still and listen to what God may be saying to you.

Ask Him to speak.

When you get distracted from your listening, come back to Jesus by meditating on your memory verse. Ask the Holy Spirit to change you to look more like Jesus today.

About this Plan

Becoming Like Jesus: Scripture Memorization

In part 4 of Becoming Like Jesus, we are going to explore what it looks like and why it matters to internalize truth. We are going to let God’s Word do what it’s meant to: transform us from the inside out. And there’s no better place to start than with the core who we are, letting His truth shape our identity.
