Heavenly Father, I ask that you would open my heart and mind to hear what you speak to me today. I know that I am your child and I ask that you allow me to embrace what that means and live it out daily in my life. In Jesus’ name, amen.

“I will be a Father to you, and you will be my sons and daughters, says the Lord Almighty.” 2 Corinthians 6:18 NIV

Consider…

In this Scripture, Paul is speaking to the Corinthian church and reminding them of God’s warning about having idols in our hearts. At the end of this warning, God says, “I will be your Father and you will be my sons and daughters.”

Why does Paul connect these two ideas? What does idolatry have to do with being God’s kids?

The point Paul is making by highlighting God’s words for us is that when we understand that God is our Father who loves us and takes care of us, we don’t have to look to anyone or anything else to meet our needs. We can trust that God is a good dad, who not only knows what we need before we even ask, but also delights in taking care of us.

Knowing that is a game-changer. What would it look like to trust God more than anyone or anything else? What are some of the things you are tempted to trust in more than you trust in your heavenly Father? Why?

“Pray like this: Our Father in heaven, may your name be kept holy. May your Kingdom come soon. May your will be done on earth, as it is in heaven. Give us today the food we need, and forgive us our sins, as we have forgiven those who sin against us. And don’t let us yield to temptation, but rescue us from the evil one.” Matthew 6:9-13 NLT

At this point, you’ve honed in your process for internalizing truth. So, take a few minutes to practice this week’s memory verse in the way that works best for you and think about how you can keep this truth top of mind throughout your day.

Set a timer for five minutes.

Quiet your heart by taking some deep breaths and letting God know any and every thought and feeling that surfaces—no matter how silly it is.

Once you release those things, ask God to speak to you.

When you get distracted from your listening, come back to Jesus by meditating on your memory verse.
