Becoming Like Jesus: Scripture Memorization

DAY 26 OF 35

Do What Jesus Did

Pray…

Heavenly Father, shape me and mold me today. Thank you for choosing to rescue me through the work of Jesus before I was even born. I want to honor you with my life. Help me show the world who you are in the way that I love. In Jesus’ name, amen.

Read…

15 I no longer call you servants, because a servant does not know his master’s business. Instead, I have called you friends, for everything that I learned from my Father I have made known to you. 16 You did not choose me, but I chose you and appointed you so that you might go and bear fruit—fruit that will last—and so that whatever you ask in my name the Father will give you. 17 This is my command: Love each other. John 15:15-17 NIV

Consider…

We all like being “in the know.” We want to be part of what is going on and we definitely hate being left out.

So get this: what Jesus is doing in this passage is inviting us to be part of what’s going on in the Kingdom of Heaven. That’s a big deal!

When He says, “...everything I have learned from my Father, I have made known to you,” He’s talking about God’s plan to rescue humanity and restore creation. Jesus made that known to us. And not just so we could be “in the know,” but so that we could be part of the plan!

What an invitation. We get to partner with Jesus by proclaiming with our words and our lives what God is doing in the world. That’s what Jesus did. And as His disciples, that’s what we get to do too.

What is standing out to you in this passage? What might it look like for you to partner with Jesus today? To do what He did in whatever big and small opportunities that He gives you to love others?

Practice…

Then he said to them all: “Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross daily and follow me. For whoever wants to save their life will lose it, but whoever loses their life for me will save it.” Luke 9:23-24 NIV

“...whoever loses their life for me will save it.” This is the last part of this week’s memory verse. And the invitation to trust the provision and perspective of our heavenly Father is still on the table.

As you practice the verse today, wrestle through any resistance you may feel to the idea of laying down control (losing your life) and following Jesus. It’s a high cost, but following Him is worth it.

Listen…

Set a timer for 5 minutes.

As you prepare to listen, tell God about anything that came to mind when you thought about laying down control. What fears surfaced that you can bring to Jesus?

Ask God to speak to you and remind you of His perfect love. He is trustworthy and true and He longs for you to find the life that is truly life.

When you get distracted, come back to Jesus by thanking Him for revealing God’s plan to us and inviting us to be part of it. Read the John passage out loud. Jesus calls you friend.
