Becoming Like Jesus: Scripture MemorizationSample

Becoming Like Jesus: Scripture Memorization

DAY 28 OF 35

Forsaking and Following

This journey of becoming like Jesus for the sake of others is just that—a journey. It’s a process we keep engaging with. When you hear the word “follow” it means just that—to follow after someone. Jesus didn't often preach super long sermons, He simply invited people to follow Him.

In Luke 5:1-11, he uses the phrase “they forsook all” as they began this new journey with Jesus. The word “forsake” literally means that they turned their back on their former lives. It implies a choice and a commitment to truly be a disciple. This wasn’t just a little side project where they could keep on doing all the same things and follow Jesus as a hobby. They literally left everything, and by doing so, agreed to follow Jesus. He was their teacher and they were His students.

Pray…

Father in heaven, thank you for sending Jesus. Jesus, thank you for showing us God’s grace and truth in a personal way. Holy Spirit, work in my heart today to help me live more truly. I trust you. In Jesus’ name, amen.

Read…

For he and all who were with him were astonished at the catch of fish which they had taken; and so also were James and John, the sons of Zebedee, who were partners with Simon. And Jesus said to Simon, “Do not be afraid. From now on you will catch men.” So when they had brought their boats to land, they forsook all and followed Him. Luke 5:9-11 ESV

Consider…

To be a disciple of Jesus we have to understand the cost. What do you need to forsake in order to fully and faithfully follow Jesus?

As a disciple of Jesus, we are invited to learn, follow, and become more like Him every day.

Take a moment to stop and write down what you need to drop to follow after Jesus.

Practice…

Speaking of learning, take time now to review the verses you have memorized up to this point. From week one all the way through till now. Consider how internalizing this truth has and is impacting your life.

Listen…

Set a timer for five minutes.

Create space in your mind and heart to hear from God.

Read over Luke 5:1-11 and ask God to speak to you.

When you get distracted, come back to Jesus by honing in on the verse or verses from that passage that stand out to you the most. Focus on what God is saying to you through them. Ask Him what they mean and allow His Word to direct your thoughts.
