Devotional 5 – Humble Me
In the last devotional, you were given the concept of becoming a disciple. Someone who is willing to first accept the teachings/beliefs of another. In this case, we are referring to us accepting the Words and Truth that God has given us. Were you, or better yet, are you today willing to accept what God says?
What He says about Himself...?
Finding out what God says for Himself is vitally important to “accepting”.
Finding out must come before acceptance.
What God says is the treasure and reading/studying/meditating on Scripture for yourself is a way to dig up that treasure.
If you aren’t willing to do the work of digging, you’ll never be able to truly lay claim to the treasure and own it for yourself. Just listening to other people share their treasure is like trying to steal from someone what they went themselves and dug up.
But when we hear/see what treasure someone else has, and we begin the effort of digging for ourselves to find that same treasure, then we can find it rightly and claim it for ourselves.
What many people fail to ever understand is that the more you focus on finding out what God desires to reveal to us about himself through Scripture, the more that we uncover what God says about us.
It’s such a paradox.
We desire deeply to understand our existence and purpose. So naturally we think to explore and ponder all sorts of possibilities for ourselves. About ourselves. We spend so many needless hours “searching for ourselves”.
But contrary to this is the real and lasting way to find out all we need to know about ourselves…
Pursue/Know Him.
Selah
(Pause and reflect)
By focusing your searching on pursuing God, you will grow in your relationship with Him.
By searching and digging to find out what He says about Himself, you will also hear what He says about you.
The best person to describe a product to you is the One who dreamed, designed and created that product.
God says about you: “For I know you. I formed you and fashioned you in your mother’s womb.” (Psalm 139:13)
You’re his creation and He is the one who dreamed you up.
He desired, designed and created you.
(Read that again.)
So as we prepare to explore Chris’s next song Humble Me, stop just a moment and say this out loud as a prayer:
Heavenly Father, thank You for being You.
Thank You for desiring to express Your thoughts to me.
Being willing to express who You are with me.
Help me Holy Spirit to hear Your thoughts and accept them in my heart and believe them into my life.
Help me to be willing to listen to what You desire to say.
Humble me.
Help me to believe.
Now please take a moment, get comfortable and focus your attention on
the words expressed in this song.
Listen now to Humble Me.
We cannot truly give away that which we do not possess ourselves.
A few lines (of many) that I would like you to ponder on:
“As I travel down the narrow road I’m walking on I hear the gravel now. You took my heart of stone. You’re the one that matters now. Just wanna know you God. I can hear you calling out. “I love you son.” Help me accept it. “I love you son.” I accept it”
Can you humble yourself, as a disciple, to accept this truth?
God loves you.
You may be struggling with your past.
You may be trying to consider past failures and past mistakes you’ve made.
Times where you’ve been so hurt or abused…feeling unworthy as if you could disqualify yourself from this Truth applying to you.
Humble yourself.
Repent.
(Correct your thinking.)
God loves you.
Return to right thinking. Accept it.
This is your beginning lesson.
He loves You and He desires to help you.
Of course, He does not desire us to fail or fall short in our lives but, when we humble ourselves to this truth that He loves you, we can begin to humble ourselves to accept His help in our lives.
In the book of James, chapter 4, verses 5-10, God says:
“Or do you think that the Scripture speaks to no purpose: “He jealously desires the Spirit which He has made to dwell in us”?
But He gives a greater grace. Therefore it says, “God is opposed to the proud, but gives grace to the humble.”
Submit therefore to God. Resist the devil and he will flee from you.
Draw near to God and He will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, you sinners; and purify your hearts, you double-minded. Be miserable and mourn and weep; let your laughter be turned into mourning and your joy to gloom.
Humble yourselves in the presence of the Lord, and He will exalt you.”
I know there is a lot in these verses but for now, try to read them again and highlight/underline what sticks out to you. Write that stuff down.
For today, focus on the words of Humble Me as a song not to just listen to, but rather, as an expression of a hunger to be helped.
To be taught by God.
By His words for you.
Focus also on these verses and try to memorize the part that stuck out to you.
Are you willing to put in the work to dig into your heart through continuing these exercises today?
If you are, I have no doubt that you will begin to see the value, the treasure of this Truth being hidden in you.
He’s been there with it all along, waiting for you.
Let’s end this Devotional with a prayer…but make it Your own.
I’ll give you some focus but use your words and out of your own mouth speak.
Thank Him
- for Him
- for His desire to know you
- for His desire for you to know him
Thank Him
- that He wants to teach you
- that He wants to reveal Himself to you
Ask for help
- to know Him
- to humble you to His truth (about Himself and you)
- to Accept It
Amen.
Remember, a true disciple is someone who humbly accepts first
and then spreads the teachings of another.
Will you fight first to accept this for yourself?
If you will…soon you will begin finding yourself owning this treasure and then,
it will be yours to spread.
I hope you will.
