The Bible In AustraliaSample

The idea that individuals in a society should seek to help each other out, especially when life turns out to be tough, is not universally held. But in Australia, we have tended to accept it. One reason for this is the biblical background. Take, for instance, the big insurance company, AMP. The 'MP' stands for 'Mutual Provident', a biblical concept derived from our verse today. Note that the passage teaches two truths held side-by-side: one, that we should bear each other's burdens, the other, that we should carry our own load! This balance is perfect: don't be lazy and expect others to pick up the bill, but at the same time, if your neighbour is in need, get out there and help! It's biblical wisdom that has seeped into the Aussie psyche.
Do you balance the two duties: carrying your own burdens, and carrying the burdens of others? Or are you leaning heavily to one side?
Lord God, give us the strength to bear our own load and the compassion to bear the loads of those around us. Amen.
