Beneath the Surface

DAY 5 OF 28

Building a house happens in several stages. First, you have to lay the foundation. Then, you build the frames, and later you add a roof, doors, walls, insulation, carpets, and all that good stuff. It takes time. Now imagine if someone showed up to a house when it was just halfway done and started to complain about it. "There's no roof! What will they do if it rains?" or "There aren't any stairs! How will they get to the second floor?"

Most of us know better than to judge a house until it's completely finished. But we're not always as patient with ourselves. Sometimes we get antsy and wonder how and why God is shaping us this way. Why didn't God make us smarter? Or happier? Or more well liked?

Those feelings are perfectly normal. It's only natural to wish we were a little closer to being "complete." But complaining about how God made you right now is like judging a house before the builders are done with it. God made you special, and is still at work in your life. The Bible promises that God will always finish what's been started. It might not be happening as fast as you'd like, but it's happening right on God's schedule. As long as you're open to it, God will keep on working.

So don't worry too much if you're not where you want to be. Trust God will help you discover who you are becoming, one step at a time.

About this Plan

Beneath the Surface

Who do you think you are? You might define your identity around your skills, abilities, and giftings. Those are great ways to start our journey, but they don’t quite reach the center. In the same way, an oceanographer heads into the depths to reveal the ocean's mysteries, we’ll need to prepare to dive deep to discover who we are and who we are becoming.
