The Mystery of Worship

DAY 4 OF 7

Let’s take a short break from King Jehosaphat. When it comes to worship, there is one person we should not forget: King David. Yesterday I mentioned Jehosaphat’s first go-to was God. It says something about his heart toward God. And just like Jehosaphat’s heart, David’s heart was also a pleasure in God’s eyes. David was (by accident?) a musician. But it is not what made him a true worshipper.

God searches for true worshippers in Spirit and in truth. These are the words from the Bible that hold deep meaning. Nowadays, Christians tend to use the phrase “a heart of worship”. It has not been mentioned in the Bible, but let’s assume this is what they mean.

David is an example for many, but he also did a lot wrong in his life. Yet, his heart was the thing God kept looking at. Have a look at Psalm 51. This Psalm was written by David, right after he cheated on his wife. Full of surrender and humiliation (SHACHAH) he begs for forgiveness of his sin.

Together with other famous names from the Bible, David is the perfect example of the imperfect human and the way God looks at us: the heart behind. And despite God’s loving way of looking at us, there is always a holy justice: the consequence of making mistakes.

How to find out if you are a true worshipper? Psalm 51 is a true worship Psalm. And David does not even sing about how great God is.

But what is it then? Before we dive into that I want to ask you to check your own heart: How is it? I have known phases in life where I was aware of my heart not being focused on God. Yet, God was always there when I chose again to decide to follow Him.

Pray Psalm 51 today with me 🧑🏻‍🦰. Although you may not know if you have done something wrong, it is always good to pray for a clean and pure heart toward God.
