CounterculturalSample

Filmmaker George Lucas once said, “Always remember, your focus determines your reality.” It’s a more eloquent way of saying, “Wherever you put your focus is where you’ll go.” Think of this in terms of driving! When your gaze is forward and focused on the road ahead, your car keeps going in that direction. But when your gaze drifts elsewhere, so does your car. If your focus is pulled or distracted, you end up moving in a direction you didn’t intend. Such is the case in life!
When we keep our eyes fixed on the things of this world, we’ll end up moving toward them whether we meant to or not. But when we set our minds on things of God, we’ll end up moving toward them and carrying them with us in our everyday lives. When we let culture influence our focus, we end up lost. But when we choose to embrace God’s countercultural way of life, we’ll find ourselves walking down the only path that will take us toward true joy and contentment.
Today, ask God to help you shift your focus back to His ways. Give yourself a signal or cue to use to remind yourself to do just that! It could be writing down this verse where you’ll see it often or simply lifting your eyes to heaven when you need the tangible reminder to do so. Whatever it is, let it be the way you choose to remind yourself to pursue the path of life God offers us.

About this Plan

Jesus had a way of taking ideas that everyone understood and flipping them upside down to show His followers something new. We’re going to look at some of Jesus’ most countercultural ideas and dive into the way they turned preconceived notions and expectations on their heads, ultimately teaching us what it looks like to take Jesus’ lead and follow His countercultural example in our own lives today.
