Celebrate Communion – a Time to Honour Jesus

DAY 4 OF 5

There’s something wonderful about sharing a meal with friends and family. Maybe your family doesn’t sit around the table together everyday, but at special times like Christmas, Thanksgiving, and birthdays you’ll take time to share a meal together. That’s exactly what Jesus and the disciples were doing at the last supper. They were sharing a meal together, just as they had done many times before. This time they were celebrating the Passover, a Jewish festival that commemorated God’s people being freed from slavery in Egypt. They didn’t know that this would be their last meal all together with Jesus before He was crucified, and they didn’t know it was the last supper!

At this meal Jesus instructed them to break bread and drink from the cup to remember Him. They didn’t know that soon after this meal Jesus would go to the cross. What was their last supper with Jesus, was also the first communion. The word communion doesn’t just mean the bread and cup, it speaks of fellowship, friendship, sharing, togetherness, and community. Their last meal together set the table for the communion Christians share together today. From the earliest days of the first Christian churches, they broke bread and had community together.

While the taking of communion is a special moment between you and Jesus, it’s also a special moment shared with other believers. Together we remember what Jesus has done for us, the very reason we gather and worship. Communion is a time to honour Jesus.
