One of the most profound mysteries of God centres around the co-existence of two of God’s seemingly very contrasting characteristics. He is mighty yet merciful at the same time. How can this be?

The might of God is evident all around us. Let’s start with His creation. I just googled "how many stars in the universe?" Answer – 200 billion trillion (and counting). Need I say more. Yet, amidst this awe-inspiring might, there is a mercy and great love that flows ceaselessly, tenderly and without bounds. Two opposing qualities as important and powerful as each other, yet so different, together.

These contrasting attributes of God’s nature converge in the person of Jesus Christ displaying not only God’s power through the miracles He performed but also His boundless compassion through acts of healing, forgiveness and, ultimately, sacrificial love.

At the cross, the fullness of the mystery is unveiled. It is the place where these two worlds collide. Divine might and mercy intersect in perfect harmony. He is not a distant deity wielding power from afar, nor is He a benevolent and powerless altruist. The cross is where God’s mightiness and power meet with His mercy and love. God’s power over death itself is a pretty strong reflection of just how mighty and powerful God, the creator of the universe, actually is. But at the same time the death of His Son was the greatest act of love to all of creation.

At the cross the same mighty God who holds the universe together also holds us in His tender embrace, offering mercy that knows no bounds.
