The Morning Hunt – Day Eight – Know Your Role
Traditionally, in a Pride of lions, the smaller females or younger males do most of the hunting. This happens because they are smaller and tend to be stealthier and faster than the larger yet stronger lions. Usually, the older larger males are only called upon for bigger game, otherwise, their primary role is the protection of the Pride. If the older lions do not get involved when needed, the smaller lions can get hurt, but if the older lions leave the Pride to hunt too often, the Pride is subject to attack by hyenas or even other lions.
We all have roles to play in our homes, jobs, churches, and communities. As men, we sometimes want to play a larger role than we currently do. There is nothing wrong with properly guided ambition. We should have larger lions or, in other words, mentors that we aspire to emulate. Paul told the Corinthian Church to follow him as he follows Christ. One translation says imitate in place of the word follow. The younger lions in the Pride are watching the larger males and trying to figure out when and if their time will come to lead the Pride. In the interim, they play their role and sometimes try to emulate the dominant males, but they submit or are forced to leave the Pride.
Despise not the days of small beginnings. Be content with the role God has given you now. Not everything we are doing now is the permanent role God has for us. Like a young lion, we must grow, learn to submit, and understand that what we do is still vital to our community. Often, we find out with the right attitude not what our role is, but what is our Calling in life. The Pride only eats when everyone understands their current role; if the Pride does not eat, the Pride does not thrive.
1 Corinthians 11:1 ESV - Be imitators of me, as I am of Christ.
1 Timothy 6:6 NLT - Yet true godliness with contentment is itself great wealth.
1 Timothy 6:6-8 MSG - A devout life does bring wealth, but it’s the rich simplicity of being yourself before God. Since we entered the world penniless and will leave it penniless, if we have bread on the table and shoes on our feet, that’s enough.
Zechariah 4:10 NLT - Do not despise these small beginnings, for the Lord rejoices to see the work begin, to see the plumb line in Zerubbabel’s hand.”
1 Peter 5:5-6 NLT - 5 In the same way, you who are younger must accept the authority of the elders. And all of you, dress yourselves in humility as you relate to one another, for “God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble.”6 So humble yourselves under the mighty power of God, and at the right time he will lift you up in honor.
About this Plan
The King of the Jungle. The symbol of Jesus and Kingdoms throughout history. The lion is one of the most majestic and awe-inspiring animals on the planet. Just as the lion is unique and designed to reign, so is God’s design for Manhood. The Morning Hunt is a 14-day Men’s Devotional that looks to teach valuable and practical lessons from a lion’s perspective.
