My Heart’s Prayer

When I was fifteen, I made a plea to the Lord. “Please, please, God, protect my heart. Don’t let me give it away until I meet the right guy.” I was deathly afraid of falling in love only to get my heart broken and falling in love again to have my heart broken again. So I earnestly prayed that God would guard my heart and I’d only fall in love once—with my future husband. God definitely answered! When guys were interested in me, I wasn’t interested in them. When I really, really wanted to date a guy, that guy just wanted to be friends. But the real test came in college: A guy wanted to date me, and after much prayer, I felt God saying it was okay to date him. “The green light! This must be it!” I thought. “He’s going to be the one!” But he wasn’t. Several months later, we ended the relationship and parted as good friends. Nothing messy. No hurt feelings. In that moment, I realized God not only protected my heart by keeping me out of relationships, but He also protected me in relationships. He had my heart and wasn’t letting go until the time was right!

Prayer: Lord, please guard my heart. I place it in Your hands. Please keep it safe, and don’t release it until the right time. Amen.
