Learn Encouragement: 9 Ways to Build Up OthersSample
Find a Positive Narrative
Building others up is a fundamental Christian principle. Finding a positive narrative about others, regardless of who they are, can transform interactions and relationships. Acts 9:27 beautifully illustrates this concept through the story of Barnabas and Paul. Despite Paul's past as a persecutor of Christians, Barnabas saw the good in him and introduced him to the apostles, highlighting his encounter with the Lord and his fearless preaching in Damascus. Barnabas, known as the Son of Encouragement, focused on Paul's positive transformation, which eventually led to Paul becoming a pivotal figure in the early Church. This example encourages us to see beyond past mistakes and to uplift others by recognizing and sharing their positive narratives.
To find a positive narrative in others, start by examining your own self-talk. If you harbor negative thoughts about yourself, it can be challenging to see the good in others. Embrace the grace of God and immerse yourself in the Gospel, which will help you develop a more positive outlook. When you interact with people, take the time to get to know them. Spend time with them, ask questions, and be an active listener. Look for what God is doing in their lives. While it's important to be discerning, as warned in the Bible, the focus here is on those striving to walk with the Lord. Adopting an attitude of seeking the positive in people can change not only your life but also the lives of those around you. This principle is the first of nine in this course, emphasizing the importance of finding and fostering positive narratives in others.
Discussion Question: Reflect on a time when someone saw the positive in you and how it impacted your life. How can you apply that experience to see and highlight the good in others, especially those who may be difficult to appreciate?
Prayer: Heavenly Father, thank You for the grace and love You show us each day. Help us to see others through Your eyes, focusing on their strengths and potential rather than their flaws. Grant us the wisdom and patience to listen, understand, and find the positive narratives in those around us. May our words and actions be instruments of Your encouragement and love. In Jesus' name, we pray. Amen.
