Learn Encouragement: 9 Ways to Build Up OthersSample
Be Encouraging in Public
Become a recognizer of positive traits and accomplishments in others. This involves not only noticing and sharing these traits in your interactions but also opening doors for others—both literally and metaphorically. Proverbs 27:2 reminds us, "Let another praise you, and not your own mouth; a stranger, and not your own lips." By actively looking for and acknowledging the good in people, you affirm their worth as creations of God. This discipline can be applied in various ways, such as physically opening doors for others, which sends a message of respect and encouragement. It also extends to creating opportunities for others, supporting them in their endeavors, and celebrating their achievements. In doing so, you embody the spirit of encouragement and create a positive environment that uplifts everyone around you.
Talking positively about people behind their backs and in front of them is another powerful way to encourage others. Often, people tend to speak negatively about others when they are not present, which can be damaging and counterproductive. Instead, strive to be someone who speaks well of others, even when they are not around. This consistency builds trust and integrity in your relationships. When introducing someone, highlight their positive traits and shared experiences to create a welcoming and affirming atmosphere. For example, instead of a generic introduction like, "This is George, he's a good guy," you could say, "This is George. When we first met, he encouraged me with his kindness and continues to be a source of joy." By fostering a culture of positive recognition and encouragement, you help build a supportive community where people feel valued and inspired to grow. As ministers and followers of Christ, becoming like Barnabas—someone who encourages and uplifts others—can profoundly impact those we encounter, changing lives for the better.
Discussion Question: Can you think of a time when someone opened a door for you—either literally or metaphorically—and how it impacted your life? How can you make it a habit to recognize and affirm the positive traits in others, both in their presence and behind their backs?
Prayer: Heavenly Father, thank You for the example of encouragement we find in Your Word and in the lives of faithful believers like Barnabas. Help us to develop the discipline of recognizing and affirming the positive traits in others. Give us the courage to speak words of encouragement and to open doors of opportunity for those around us. Teach us to be sincere in our praise and consistent in our support, building a culture of love and affirmation. May our actions reflect Your love and bring glory to Your name. In Jesus' name, we pray. Amen.
